Let them eat bread

If there is a god
how do you think it feels?
It can’t hear the cries of starving children
because of our demands for dessert.

If there is a god
how do you think it feels?
It can’t hear those screaming in agony
because of the ruckus from our headaches?

Can you imagine the frustration it feels
when it cannot clothe those shivering in the cold
because we keep clamoring for fur coats?

It can’t put a roof over the homeless
because we keep distracting it
with our petitions for mansions.

If we have to pray let us
stop ringing the bells and
simply say
silently say
“thank you”,
so that god
if there is a god
can hear the cries of those in need.
